The Brief:

To upgrade and extend the Old Mortuary building in Rotherhithe to create an expanded social centre facility.

The Team:

Belfry worked closely with the consultants of a multi disciplinary practice and the client representative.

Specific challenges:

• The building stood in previously consecrated ground and required home office approvals and special procedures to deal with the possibility of the discovery of human remains.
• Although not listed, the appearance of the existing building was deemed to be very important. Every effort was made during work to the existing fabric and the construction of the extension to ensure the preservation and continuity of appearance was maintained.
